MTAT Launches First National Poetry Workshop Onsite for Buwan ng Wika

Mga Tala at Tula (MTAT) Community made history by staging its first national face-to-face poetry writing workshop at the as part of the nationwide celebration of Buwan ng Wika.

Titled Palihan sa Pagsulat ng Tula 2025, the event gathered ten emerging poets chosen from more than 600 entries nationwide. MTAT founder Ron Canimo chaired the project and served as workshop director, ensuring the program highlighted the richness of Filipino literature and the vibrance of its new generation of poets.

Fellows represented a diverse mix of schools and backgrounds: Jonalyn Arnaiz from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Meeghan Dorothy Berou from the University of Mindanao, Yuangelo de Guzman and Cris Gacosta from the University of the Philippines, Thomas Jacob Santiago and Mark David Silencio from Bulacan State University, John Ralph Encela from Lyceum of the Philippines University–Cavite, Jian Mark Pugal from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng San Pablo, Joseph Labayan from Mariano Marcos State University, and Denzen Miel Repayo from Tinajeros National High School.

Acclaimed poets Sir Allan Popa and Sir Jerry Gracio mentored the fellows through lectures, writing exercises, and constructive critiques. Their sessions emphasized clarity, rhythm, and authenticity in poetry while underscoring the role of literature in strengthening cultural identity and national pride.

“This historic gathering reaffirms our belief that poetry remains a living, breathing force in our communities,” said Ron Canimo, adding that the first onsite format allowed participants to build stronger connections and deeper collaboration.

Gratitude was extended to fellows, mentors, and supporters who continue to keep poetry alive. Serving as the culminating activity for Buwan ng Wika, the workshop reinforced MTAT’s mission to nurture Filipino writers and elevate the richness of the Filipino language through literature.

To cap the celebration, MTAT Poetry Night was held where Palihan fellows and volunteers performed their original pieces. Guest performers included renowned spoken word artists Mai Cantillano, Leandro Reyes, and Alfonso Manalastas, whose presence further highlighted the spirit of collaboration between emerging and established voices in Philippine poetry.
